An Alzheimer’s Care Facility for Your Loved One

AUTHOR: Karl Smith

Alzheimers Care Facility
As Alzheimer’s disease has continued to spread, the options in Alzheimer’s care have been increasing too. While this is a good thing, the variety of choices can be a little overwhelming, especially when you first begin looking for help outside your home. When you begin to research an Alzheimer’s care facility, not only will you have to sort through a myriad of services, you will most likely be struggling with the fact that you can no longer cope with taking care of your family member by yourself, and you may experience feelings of guilt, exhaustion, and stress.

While eventually there’s a good chance that you will have to find a permanent, long-term care facility for your loved one, an interim step could be an adult daycare geared to serving the needs of Alzheimer’s patients. While you are still the primary caregiver, you can get some much-needed breaks in the never-ending daily care routine.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, and so eventually you can expect to find a long-term placement for your loved one. An Alzheimer’s care facility is what you want to look into. This type of facility ideally provides a secure, comfortable situation and is staffed with specially trained caregivers.

What to Look For

As you explore options in your local area, there are several important features to look for in an Alzheimer’s care facility. Does the staff seem competent, professional, and caring? Is the facility clean, up-to-date, and safe? Are the activities geared toward helping the residents perform familiar tasks? Is there enough structure without being too rigid? Are there policies and procedures firmly in place to handle residents wandering off? Try to think of all the questions you can and make sure you get the answers you are looking for before making your final decision on an Alzheimer’s care facility.

Financial Options

Placing your loved one in an Alzheimer’s care facility can be an expensive decision. However, there is financial aid available. Look into the various options – from long-term insurance and other insurance solutions to Medicare and Medicaid, you will be able to find the help you need. Sometimes even your mortgage company can offer help, perhaps through a reverse mortgage. Check into the possibility of other benefits being available to your loved one. The key thing here is to set aside any reticence you might have and explore any and all help available in finding and paying for the right Alzheimer’s care facility.
